There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is not permitted. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries aside from the casino, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
