There is a captivating history to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den betting is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that contains a number of conveniences aside from the gambling den, which has ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
