There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino wagering is against the law. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of most borders.
The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship casino, features 150 slots and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel building that highlights a number of amenities aside from the casino, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
